A switched-on partnership
BT's new next-generation network is the result of consultation across the telecoms industry.
BT, in consultation with the UK telecommunications industry, and with input from Ofcom, will be managing the upgrade of its phone, broadband and ISDN lines to a next-generation network. BT's introduction of a new nationwide next-generation network is a great example of collaboration between the telecommunications industry, government and business.
BT delivers network services to over 700 service providers that provide phone, internet and mobile services to customers across the UK. So even though consumers may not be a direct customer of BT, their services may still be carried over the BT network and therefore could be affected by the migration of the network to 21CN.
Migrating the whole of the UK's phone, ISDN and Broadband services to this new network is an enormous task - one that the entire telecommunications industry has been working with BT to plan. This involves the migration of 30 million voice lines across the UK, preparations in approximately 5,500 BT exchanges and an extensive testing programme underway to prepare for implementation.
What will the future look like?
With robust new next-generation networks in place handling vast amounts of data, voice, and video we’ll be free to use our imaginations to open up new business opportunities. Making transactions happen on a global scale will become increasingly possible.
Next-generation networks also make our working days easier. Broadband, phone and ISDN services will be streamlined to allow ease of use in the office, on the road or on the other side of the world.
Our conversations, opportunities and relationships won’t be limited by the new network; they’ll be switched-on by it.
